Springs Academy Landscape Project
Pupils from Sheffield Springs Academyhave been involved in a unique project over the past few months with assistance from the Sheffield City Council Community Forestry team.Pupils from the school have designed a community garden to be jointly used by the Academy and the Spires Centre on East Bank road as an outdoor teaching and performance space with Art and Biology gardens and an orchard.
The project has been managed by business and enterprise students from the Academy who have raised over £8000 towards the garden. The pupils have applied to the community assembly for funding and were awarded £1000 towards educational activities around the project.
The management team elected to spend the funding on a chainsaw sculpture designed by the pupils as part of a competition within the school to be mounted as an entrance feature to the new garden.

Lorraine Botterill Chainsaw Carving
The sculpture will be carved by award winning sculptor Lorraine Botterill who will be showing pupils how to chainsaw carve as well as learning about woodland wildlife from the Community Forrester.
The public will have an opportunity to watch the sculpture being carved on the 25th – 27th of April on the land behind the Spires Centre on East Bank road. The event will be open to the public after school from 3 till 5pm for those who might like to have a closer look or askLorraine some questions.
Angus Hunter Community Forestry Officer for Arbourthorne said “We would like to use this sculpting event to launch, and raise awareness of, this exciting new project, which has been designed, managed and fundraised by pupils from the Academy. We intend that the garden will be open for use by the public outside school hours for community events and relaxation. We hope to begin putting in the path network in the next few months and involve pupils in every stage of the garden’s construction.”
There are already 2 new poly tunnels built by pupils studying a BTEC in Countryside and Environment, who will soon be filling them with vegetables for the school allotment and flowers to sell at community events.
This event is open to all local people from the Arbourthorne and Gleadless Valley area. So come down on the 25th – 27th and learn more about this fantastic new community project!
